How much does it cost to change a water pump on a 2005 chevy trailblazer?

here you go Heather, If you have the 5.3 liter engine, the price for the new pump, $$96.89 Labor would be 3.8 hours to replace. Most shops charge from $ 60-80 per hour. Dealers More. If you have a 4.3 liter engine, Part is $65.00 labor would be 3.3 hours. So it should cost about $362.89 plus tax for the 5.3 engine %26amp; $296.00 plus tax for the 4.3 engine. the 5.3 is a V-8 and 4.3 is a V-6 . You and find your engine size , if you do not know if it is a 6 or 8 cyl. by looking at the small white sticker under the hood compartment. I hope this will give you a better idea. Good Luck! :)How much does it cost to change a water pump on a 2005 chevy trailblazer?
Just labor would be around $50.-$75.How much does it cost to change a water pump on a 2005 chevy trailblazer?
the pump ita self is around 50-60 bucks and probably 200-300 to install replace antifreeze etc
parts cost hmm...just the pump about 80ish. replace hoses also about 15 more. labor about 70. so 165 if you get it done by some1 at a shop???
Depends on where you go, usually the time is around 1 hr to 1.5 (figure labor rate of your shop) and your pump and gasket price. Also if you want a heavy duty unit. To be fair I would need an engine size. I think the 6 is a little cheaper then the 8. Also they will need to coolant change and bleed out your system which usually that's around $80 at least in my area. I do them for around 160 to 500 depending on what it's in. Your pump is going to be around 45$ if they want more, look at your local parts store or shop ( RockAuto.com )
go to yoour nearest auto zone plop down about thirty nine dollar,s go to your nearrest garage and they will install it for about fifty buck,s

How long does it take to change the water pump on a dodge 3.8 do you have to move the ac?

Well according to Mitchell on demand the labor charge is an hour. Which is not much at all. A do it yourselfer could handle this job. I believe there are 5 or 6 bolts that hold it in. The water pump is all the way at the bottom of the engine. How long does it take to change the water pump on a dodge 3.8 do you have to move the ac?
thanks dog you were about right. remove passenger wheel, wheel well cover and voila. except don't break the factory 10mm bolts off in the timing cover. they are factory loctited. sucks.

This should be a V6 engine correct. if looking at front of engine, toward the belt , the water pump is located behind pulley appox. 5 inches on the side toward radiator. highest pulley on right side of engine. Replacement can be performed easily without many special tools.. First loosens each of the pulley bolts on pump. Then release tension on belt and route away from pulley. Remove remaining pulley bolts and pulley , Water pump has 5 bolts holding it to cover assembly, Mark-index the way pump installs and remove. Clean all gasket material. Install new pump and gasket, refill system and to open air blled on cooler pipe near water pump to allow air to escape. How do you change a water pump and on 2002 pontiac grand am gt?

  • 1993 Pontiac 2.3 changed water pump, now no start?

I changed the water pump on a 2.3 liter Pontiac engine, now it cranks but won't start. Timing gears were locked in place during work, so timing is probably OK. How can I check the alignment of the timing gears to verify correct timing?1993 Pontiac 2.3 changed water pump, now no start?
If the timing gears were locked in place and you did not remove them, then that is not your problem.

Retrace your steps and see if you knocked a wire off or maybe you forgot to reconnect the crank angle sensor during reassembly.1993 Pontiac 2.3 changed water pump, now no start?
Notes: biennial oil changes and water as coolant= bad ideas. :(

This engine also had valve lifters that were so full of grit they wouldn't compress at all.

    I have a '92 w/2.3, and I've changed the water pump...trying

to remember what is close by.

Maybe you unplugged the injector wiring harness?

Also check the wiring going to the ignition module (under

the aluminum cover)...may have pulled out.
Sounds like it hydralocked on you. For what reason did you originally change the pump? Overheating? Possible Coolant loss? These engines have had many coolant related problems historically, and often can be attributed to cracked blocks and cylinder head failures. This may have been the original problem.
you don't mess with your timing belt? if you do so you have to put on time
I gaurantee you that the timing is off..trust me..when you released the tensioner it may have jumped a tooth or two..i have a 94 grand am i just did a water pump on..remember all the gears..crank and camshaft(s) dots have to be lined up perfectly..no room for error.
only a auto shop can tell you i am pontiac master tech and the only way to check for timeng alignment is to remove cover from passenger side of engine and check all marks.if the car was running when you carried to have water pump installed it is a problem with the timeing being out of alignment i have done many many of these and the job takes 8 hours to do i that is to but a water pump on this car .its is very easy to get out of alignment and even harder to correct. but if car was not running before installing water pump the problem could be ignition module, with is about 400 to 500 hundred.fuel pump 300.00 or crank sensor these are the only things that will stop car from running other than no gas. this is one of the hardest engines nown to work on so always carry to a pontiac dealer normal auto shops are a wast of time and money and generaly only make things worst. hope this helps.

How hard is it to change the water pump on a 2000 pontiac gran prix?

On the 3.1 - piece of cake. One caveat - have you ever done this before? If not - buy a repair manual from a parts store that has step by step instructions. The main thing to keep in mind is to clean off the old gasket as thoroughly as possible. Leaving even a little of the old gasket on the manifold will make for a bad seal and your new pump will leak. It's not necessary to use anything other than the gasket that comes with the new pump IF you clean it completely prior to installing. Us a 'light' putty knife to evenly take it all down to the metal - be careful, however, as the block is aluminum - too aggressive with the removal and you could damage the area.

    Good luck

I need to l know how to change the water pump, water pump belt, and pulleys on a 2000 cadillac eldorado. ?

My boyfriend will be doing the work for me. I told him I would try to find him some directions. We had the car in the shop to get a new radiator when we found out the water pump belt had spilt and parts of it were melted to the pulleys. Now we have to change the pulleys and the belt. My boyfriend decided to change the pump as well since that could have caused the problem with the belt and pulleys. Thanks a bunch!I need to l know how to change the water pump, water pump belt, and pulleys on a 2000 cadillac eldorado. ?
I have a real good friend who had worked on the 4.0L version of this Northstar in an Olds Aurora. It was a water pump and related junk, too.

    He hated that.

Your b/f will be an EX-b/f once he even tries to tackle this job.

Send the car to a good shop and save your relationship.

This is not a joke. Your b/f does not deserve a task this horrendous. I hope.I need to l know how to change the water pump, water pump belt, and pulleys on a 2000 cadillac eldorado. ?
This task is way too complicated to address here. It is a reasonably difficult job. Go to a parts store and purchase a repair manual specific to that car and you should be okay. By the way, great idea to replace the pump; those belts do not fail for no reason. And do not-repeat, do not!- use a rebuilt water pump! Get a new one, or you'll be sorry.
no a trusty mechanic needs to do it or he will have some serious issues to do with.

Best way to know all about your car is to buy a Chiltons Manual. Online or at most auto parts store. They are amazing books.

Good Luck. Oh and the 25 dollar price is a bargain, cheaper than screwing it up and paying someone else to fix it :)Does anyone know how to change a water pump on a 1989 Chevy Silverado 350. 2 wheel Drive?

pay $50 for the manual.... tells you how to do everything...

the easy answer is... buy a new water pump.. unbolt the old one .. bolt the new one in..

Or get the seals.. take the old ones out stick the new ones in...

would help if we had an idea how much wrenching work you've done before,,

I guess its a case of how able you are when it comes to pulling things apart %26amp; putting them back together.. after all its not brain science,,, or was that rocket surgeryHow do i change the water pump seals on a 98 kx 125?
the water pump oil seal sits in the actual crankcase, just changing the whole water pump wont replace the seal. You'll need to split the crankcase to change it so i'm afraid its an engine out job. And if you're doing that you might as well give it a bit of a rebuild at the same time!

could someone help me, i need to change the water pump on my 92 sundance, i just replaced the motor and now the water pump is going...gggrrrrrr, i need to fix it asap!!!!

and no i do not want to take it into the shop, it costs alot and the guy we use is whiny about it.lol

This is not a hi-tech job, but it can be hard.

You have to remove the belts and hoses that go to the waterpump. Remove the bolts that hold it on, and pull the pump off.

Depending on how much room you have, you may have to remove the radiator to do this.

Remove any remaining gasket material from the engine block. Then replace the gasket and pump, and anything else you had to remove.

Replace the antifreeze you lost with a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze.Would some one please tell me how to change the water pump on my stuiped car!!!???
You just replaced the motor, but kept the old water pump???

    Does not compute.
Haynes is better than Chilton, in my opinion. However, your local library has reference manuals. Good luck.
get a new one then LOOK at all of the things that you need to remove that will tell you why it cost so mutch [ it is about a 3 hr gob ] drain remove gasget put back fill etc. if you have a chilton then it will tell you all that you need [ cost ??? time ??? up to you]
its a front wheel drive car so its a tad more difficult than with a rear wheel drive car. you didnt specify engine size, 2.2 4cyl or 3.0 V6. if its the six, id spend the money and have it professionally done, its already hard enough to do everything else on one of those. if its the 4 cyl then its cake. find it, drain the block and radiatior, unbolt everything in the way, clean it, but a NEW pump not a rebuilt one, bolt it up, put everything back the way it was and put a 60/40 mix of coolant, it offers a better mix. good luck.
    Disconnect battery ground cable.

Drain cooling system, and remove upper radiator hose.

Remove A/C compressor from mounting brackets and position aside with refrigerant lines attached, if equipped.

    Remove alternator.

Disconnect lower radiator hose, bypass hose. Remove four water pump to engine attaching screws and water pump, Figs. 53 and 54.

    Reverse procedure to install.

Why cant i find out how to change a water pump on a 1996 ford Taurus?

Take it to a dealerWhy cant i find out how to change a water pump on a 1996 ford Taurus?
Because it's actually not that easy. you'd be better off taking it to a dealer or mechanic
Check your local library. They may ave some repair manuals
Buy a Chilton book, you can find them in the automotive dept. It saved us alot of money over the years. if you have time, and you can read, the book can explain and instruct you how to do just about anything with your car.
Auto Zone or whatever is near you. I hear people all the time ask questions like this. Just call them up
buy a chilton's repair manual from Auto Zone. Also, find it,take it off , and then put it back in the same order you took it off. It's not a real simple job, but with average mechanical skill you can figure it out.Don't forget to clean the gasket or o-ring surfaces well.
Because information costs money, people with access to the information and whom pay for the online access don't want a nice lawsuit from their information source for publishing on a web forum because we are trying to help someone who doesn't want to spend the $19.95 at Autozone for the book.

The library and other places have books where you can find out how to change the water pump and are free for loan (some use for reference only and requires a xerox of the page for the information), autozone sells many sources on how to do it , and saying in words and seeing in pictures as well as words makes for a totally difference when replacing the pump.

I guarantee a dealer and other mechanic shops will tell you to get lost if you look for answers ( I've asked dealers myself for answers and only have one even willing to give me some information, and that's only because I buy from them alot)

That and I think on the last post, people gave you a general information on how to do it... I haven't changed a pump on a 1996 or even anything close to that year in 4 years or so , so I can't give anymore information than I already have.

I sorry to sound harsh but dude, facts are people who got the information, don't like sharing the info without seeing some green.
itsw not that hard, just take the oldone off and lay it out on a table just the way it was on the car, and put the new one on in reverse process. just make sure all the old gasket material is off and use a new gasket. it can be done in an hour.

How do you change out a water pump for a 96 z24 cavaliar?

Need to know how difficult it is to change out the water pump on a z24 chevy Cavaliar. Do I need special tools etc. Can I do it from the top or do you have to get underneath the car.How do you change out a water pump for a 96 z24 cavaliar?
Here are the instructions, it really doesn't require any special tools but it is not an easy pump to change, I would recomend having a pro do the job. The pump on your engine is run from the timing chain not a belt making replacement quite difficult. It will require work from the top and bottom of the car, GM recomends using a car lift. If you decide to try this do yourself a favor and get your hands on a service manual. To give you an idea of the complexity of this job, Mitchell labor time guide allows 5.6 hours for an expierenced tech to replace your water pump. REMOVAL

How do I get the fan off the pump? There is a big nut on it,Do I turn it to get off?Another other details please to make it easier.

ThanksI have to change my water pump on 1998 Dodge Dakota.?
you don't have to remove the radiator on that one,but if you do it gives you a lot more room to work in,and on the nut most parts stores sells the wrench that removes the nut and holds the fan at the same time, ask at any advance or auto zone store and they will either rent you one or sell you one for the job,if you plan on doing this much id buy the tool ,it doesn't cost much more to buy it than to rent it ,and its kind of handy to have around, good luck.I have to change my water pump on 1998 Dodge Dakota.?
leave the rad in it Yes you have to take the fan off with the nut, its easier to do with a hammer and chisel and leave the belt on until you get the nut broke loose remove the fanshroud and fan at the same time so you dont hit the radiator also take the time to change the bypass hose while the pump is off
Since you will want to drian the coolant anyway, thherwise it will leak all over, removing the radaitor will give you better acess to the front of the truck. it will also give you the room to work and not damage the radaitor
The Steps involved are quite extensive. I would pick up the repair guide from your locate auto parts store to assist you with the step by step instructions.
jp#5 is correct. Also I would but a new thermostat and gsk on it too.

your water pump is located in the front center of the engine behind the timing cover and is driven by the timing belt. The timing belt must be removed to service the pump and recommend changing the belt at the same time. the only special tool you will need is a puller to remove the crank pulley this can be rented at an auto parts store the rest comes apart with basic hand tools. I recommend buying a service manual for your car at the parts store you get the other items needed to change the pump it will give you a step by step procedure for changing your belt and pump. How do you change the water pump on a 96 3.5l dodge intrepid?
Well as far as I can tell you may not have to remove the crankshaft pulley but I could be wrong. You will however have to remove the timing belt and you might as well replace it anyway since you're in this far. I unfortunately I don't have enough details as the one I did was several years ago.
in time is correct....but if you are really good you don't need to pull of the balancer....although not recomened you can fold the belt behind it if you need to but the proper way is to take it off.....hay desperate times call for despirate measures!!!!....by the way you might want to replace the timing belt idler pulley as well....cause at about 190,000 the bearing will seize

    1.

Drain the coolant from the radiator or engine block into a clean drain pan. Some vehicles require that you remove one end of the lower radiator hose to drain the system. If the coolant is rusty, dirty or over two years old, dispose of it properly, and flush the system before replacing the pump, as contaminated coolant could cause failure of the new pump.

    2.

To remove the fan and fan clutch, start with the fan shroud (if you have one) and move it inward over the fan. Remove the fan bolts, and take the fan and shroud off together. If the vehicle has a fan clutch, you might want to consider replacing it at this time. Fan clutches should always be laid face down to prevent damage and assure proper operation. Check the fan for cracks, bent blades or other defects. Don't try to repair a damaged fan, always replace it.

    3.

Remove other components as needed to make the water pump accessible. These would include the belts, alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. It is not always necessary to remove the hoses or wiring to these components most times you can just move them out of the way - simply place them out of the way. Consult your cars repair manual for specific instructions on engines where parts such as timing belts must be disturbed. Remove all heater and by-pass hoses that are connected to the water pump. At this time, remove any hose fittings that thread into the pump.

    4.

Remove the water pump attaching bolts, noting their lengths and positions for correct replacement. Remove the pump from the engine.

IMPORTANT: If the pump does not come off easily, check to be sure all the mounting bolts have been removed. Do not try to force it off. After the old pump has been removed, carefully clean all the old gasket material from the mounting surface of the engine. Also wire brush the threads of the water pump mounting bolts to pre-pare for reinstallation.

If required, transfer the studs for fan attachment from the old pump to the new pump. This is most easily accomplished by using the ';double nut'; method.

Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change?

    Hey all--

I just paid $900 at the Volkswagen dealership to get my timing belt, water pump, rollers, and air pump replaced. Is that a good deal? Also, how does the timing belt replacement relate to performance? I noticed my car was a little faster than before (maybe it's because I was driving another car for 2 days).Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change?
You made a wise decision to have your car timing belt/water pump changed at the dealership as they are major components. I believe the $900 was well spent and will serve you well for many more years of safe driving. Unless the old belt was loose or slipping, thus possibly causing the valves to open at wrong timings, I don't think you will notice any difference in the car performance after the replacement, especially if it was a preventive maintenance at the recommended mileage. But I do believe you will feel some difference in terms of the engine smoother acceleration and responsiveness. The $900 spent can really do wonders sometimes, at least in your mind.Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change?
It is a VW, so 900 sounds about right. I would've done it myself though, but that's just me. The belt/pump replacement will not change your performance.
Here's my answer, not sure it is right, but right for me. After a certain time, I replace my timing belt. I may not always replace my water pump with my timing belt. Why, the water pump may go for another 100, 000 miles like it did in my last car. I don't see anything you did or replaced that relates to performance. I change things because the maintenance schedule calls for them to be changed. When I pull them off, sometimes they are good and sometimes not so good.
It makes your car not die. It prevents damage to the engine if you either overheat it because your water pump's died, or damage to the valves and lifters if the timing belt breaks. This is exactly the peventive maintenance the car needs to continue providing reliable transportation for you. I've heard some horror stories from people who have neglected to do this maintenance. They often need a whole new engine, or if they're lucky, just a new head for their engine. $4000 later they're fine.

So yeah, $900 was a bargain.

How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?

According to the Gates Belts website (link below), you have an interference type engine whose valves and pistons collide causing major engine damage if the timing belt breaks. The belt is scheduled for replacement at 60,000 mile intervals and the water pump is driven off the timing belt. If you do the job yourself, you'll have no warranty on the work done, whereas a shop will give you at least a 90 day/ 4,000 mile warranty on both the parts and labor. That means you get the job done for free if the parts or workmanship fail soon after installation. However the total cost will be about $600, depending on whether the tensioner pulley and what other parts are replaced and whether you go to the dealer or have an independent shop do the work. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?
If the pump is driven by the timing belt then you should replace belt and water pump together, it is a lot of work to get in there again so do them together. If you're not an advanced shade tree mechanic, take it in, timing belt/pump replacement is a big job, at the very least be sure to have a shop manual to follow. It is on average a 5 hour job, if not done properly you'll have to do it all over again.

The first thing you need is some penetrant oil. you didn't mention whether or not they were broken so i will presume they are.

Get some high quality vice grips and clamp them on super super tight at the tip of the vice grips.. Start rocking the vice grips back and forth but mostly toward losening. the moment you detect the stud did move, begin to work it off by rocking and turning toward removal. continue with penetrant

I know the vehicle you are doing. ugh. fun job eh? well, not too bad but it's pretty tight in there.

There just isn't any room to work! Any ideas?1988 Honda Civic - How do you change the water pump?
Take Front left wheel out, remove wheel guard, crank pulley, all drive belts out. Then supper engine with jack from bottom, remove front left engine mount out, align timing belt to TDC, then take it out. At this time you should have about 4'; space between the water pump. You just take out the mounting bolts, and install new water pump with new gasket.

They are torqued very light, and over torquing the bolts would prevent the water pump from spinning.1988 Honda Civic - How do you change the water pump?

How to change a water pump?

I have a geo metro 93 lsi 3 cylander car. I need to change the water pump. also the timing belt but i dont have the manual. id ont know how tight the belt needs to be on, any helP?How to change a water pump?
I thought those cars came in 6 packs, and when one breaks you just crush it on your forehead like a beer can and pop a new one! LOL, No really I used to have a Sprint and the 3 banger was the same. The water pump is down usually behind the fan on the side of the motor, and roughly in the middle of the engine. It has a pulley on it and a belt that drives it. There will be an alternator, that has wires and lots of holes in it. Then you may have a pulley for the Air cond. if you have that. next is the power steering pump if you have it and that will have a place to fill it with fluid, so thats how you can tell what it is. Then the main fan belt on the big fan, and then should be a little pulley down in there that is sticking out of the engine. That should be your water pump. It will probably be in a tight place as they usually are. You will have to take all the components off that are in front of it to get to it. When you get all that stuff out of the way, the pump usually is just attached with a few bolts and a gasket. It may have to be forced off but dont use a screw driver or anything sharp to pry on it. I would hit the pulley end with a hammer lightly to knock it off. Use a good gasket remover and a rag over a piece of flat wood or hard plastic to clean it off. It is very important to have a totally clean surface on the motor to seal it to, or it will leak. I use denatured alcohol to clean the mating surfaces to remove any oils. It sounds like alot of attention to detail, but if you want to only do it once then it is worth it. Another thing is make sure you buy a high quality pump and have it tested if they can before you put it on. Dont ever buy a pump that has a ';lifetime replacement warranty'; because they know that if it doesnt work, they just give you another crappy one. You have to do all the work again and see it that one works. When you put it all together, try to resist using too much sealant. make sure you use a high temp good quality sealer and gasket. A light skin is all you need of the sealer on both the engine and new pump. Put the gasket on the pump and bolt it back, I usually give it over night to cure before I put fluid in and fire it up. I have had good luck with that combo.

As for the Timing belt, that is a little more involved and you have to take the side of the motor apart. It is not a job for amateurs as there are many parts to line up just right when you put the new belt on and if you mess it up your engine could be damaged when you crank it. It has to do with the timing of the engine and the top of the motor. With a manual and a friend that knows a bit about cars you should be able to do it. Good luck! How to change a water pump?
Best bet is the library for a book. Geo and Suzuki share a lot of engineering and probably are the same in your case. Timing belt is tricky..no slack but don't over tighten

Is this the same car with injector problem? If so check the head gasket by doing a compression test, I think it's gone out on you from over heat. good luck
Timing belt has a tension-er and If you have never done this before, without supervision, I don't recommend it. When you go to start your engine, coolant will be everywhere period

probably not that hard but if you want the best result take it to a shop. but if they dont do good you can always thke them to court lol
its not that hard, but you will need special tool to hold pulley and wrench to loosen fan clutch, just so you will know.
Question i have David is how mechanically inclined are you and a water pump is a mild intermediate job for a professional the book says 3.5 hours time plus parts
Its not hard at all but you do have to have that special tool which is around $60.00. But if you are crafty you can make your own, easily. Don't go for a rebuilt one get a new own. Make sure that it is level before putting it on. We put one on my Z71 and found out it was slightly warped and had to go exchange it after trying to get it tight enough and never could.

How to change a water pump on a 1969 33 HP Johnsom Outboard?

don't worry the '69 33hp is mechanical shift, not electric.

There's a cover plate on the port side of the exhaust housing, near the bottom, held on by 2 screws. Take that off to access the shift rod connector. Disconnect the lower shift rod from the upper.

6 bolts hold the gearcase to the exhaust housing, take those out %26amp; pull the lower unit off. There's an o-ring on the drive near the splines -- that needs to be on there.

3 hex-head screws hold the pump housing in place. Pull it off over the drive shaft. Slide the impeller drive pin out %26amp; remove the impeller.

Remove the impeller base plate. If the housing %26amp; base aren't scratched or scored they can be reused.

Slide the new base plate over the drive shaft, followed by the new impeller. Insert the drive pin through the impeller %26amp; drive shaft.

Smear a dab of your trailer axle grease inside the housing, and slide the housing down over the impeller.

Using only your hand, turn the drive shaft clockwise while pushing housing down over the impeller. Don't use any kind of tool on the drive shaft splines.

Use molly lube on the driveshaft splines.

Use 3m #847 on the joint between lower unit and exhaust housing (permatex #2 is okay, just messier to apply %26amp; harder to clean off there next time).

Use OMC gasket sealant (or some kind of anti-sieze) on the threads of all the retaining bolts or else corrosion will freeze 'em in place. How to change a water pump on a 1969 33 HP Johnsom Outboard?
I had a 1970 40HP, the water pump change was similar to newer outboards, drop the lower unit, replace the impeller and wear plate, and the housing if its damaged. Be careful of the wires coming down for the shift control if its electric shift, don't just yank the the lower unit off. A repair manual will give you more detail, its been a while since i changed it.

$200-300, because you pretty much change the timing belt at the same time. How diffifcult/expensive would it be to change the water pump on a 1990 toyota celica?
depends if its got 1.6l motor its a external pump which is easier than the 2.0l or 2.2l which is driven by timing belt . drain out coolant remove part replace part fill with new coolant dont forget thermostat and gasket
Pretty easy to do. First you need to take all the collant out of the system. This is done by disconnecting you lower hose running from your radiator. This will be messy and you will need something to hold the fluid. Cats love antifreeze and will drink it. It will kill them. So properly despense it.

Then while that is draining. Loosen you belt and remove that. Once that is removed you should have access to your pump. There will be bolts running around it that will need to be removed.

Then small flat head screwdriver should be able to work it free. Make sure to clean the housing where the pump was removed from all deposits and gaskets comes off to. Cleaner the better.

Before you put your new pump make sure to use silicone around it to hold the gasket on. Put, tighted bolts and follow throught putting everything else back on and your set. But dont forget your anitfreeze. Some might also replace thermostate to. Here is a link for a pump.

We just did one the other day. Parts and labor at a shop figure just under 300 dollars. It's on the side of the engine, loosen the bolts that hold the pulley on, remove the serpentine belt and then take the pulley bolts the rest of the way off. Remove all the small bolts that go around the water pump, slide it out, clean the engine surface, re-install. Takes all of about an hour and a half.

the fan comes of with a special tool and some of them are reverse threads(clockwise to remove). you will need to rent or buy the tool that has two large wrenches, one to loosen the fan bolt and one to go across the 4 bolts that hold the pulley on to the pump. The upper shroud comes off and it is smart to drain the radiator first to make less of a mess

I have not done one on a van that new but on the older ones if you dont have A/C still working I found it to be faster to remove the radiator and grill and work from the front. If your had A/C but it no longer works just remove the condenser and dont put it back in. If the AC still works then its really not practical to remove it so its up to you if you want to remove the radiator since it only gains you about 2'; of space.

if it is a 3.1 or 3.4 liter engine it's fairly simple to acsses and change but if it is a 3.8 liter it will be harder to change but regardless of which engine you have getting the air out of the cooling system after the install is tricky and you don't want an air lock.

i need to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro someone suggested i change the timing belt also the car has 130,0000 mi on suzuki motor 1.3 how much trouble would this be to doHow much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?
It's no picnic, and when you are done it will still be a '96 geo metro.

    Parts:

    Water pump: ($53.73+tax):

    Timing Belt: ($30.33+tax)

    http://www.familycar.com/store/item/Geo_

Start by getting all of the external stuff out of the way - the hood is tiny so remove it (trust me - it is a lot easier to work on a car with the hood off). Jack it up and put it on stands too.

Remove any accessory junk, coolant overflow, hoses, etc., be very careful with any wiring and connections - then start taking stuff off the engine - alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor (you don't necessarily have to remove them, sometimes you can use zip-ties to hold them up out of the way).

Once you can access the front of the engine, remove the timing belt cover (sometimes easier said than done). I break most of them, because they aren't designed to come off while the engine is in the car (without jacking the engine up and removing a motor mount).

Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to check for timing marks on the crank and cam - if both gears do not have them, then you will need to mark the gears and the block/head so you can put it back into time when you put the new belt on. Failure to do so can cause a lot of wasted time, and could possibly damage the engine.

Turn the engine over (pulling the spark plugs makes this easier to do - and you probably need to inspect those anyway), until it is at 'TDC', meaning that both the crank and the cam timing marks are pointing straight up (the engine might be at a bit of a tilt).

Triple check your timing marks - and then release the tensioner (most people suggest replacing the tensioner along with the timing belt and water pump, but I never have). Remove the old belt, and then remove the water pump.

Install the new water pump - put the new timing belt on, line up your timing marks, and let the tensioner back down.

Cuss when it goes out of time when it tightens up and turns one or both gears. Release it again, and play with the way they are lined up so that when it tightens up that both crank and cam timing marks are EXACTLY lined up. If you put the whole thing back together and it isn't in time, you will be very mad.

Reassemble, and if you did everything right, fire it up!How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?
Before you attempt those repairs, I suggest you go and get yourself a repair manual for your car. Some engines are harder and more complicated than others. The manual will give you step-by-step instructions on how to do those and many other repairs. Read the instructions and then decide if it's something you can do or would be better in the hands of a pro.
    Water pump is very hard.
Leave it to the experts, you only need the timing slightly out, and you will wreck the whole valve train, or even the pistons, better to spend $600 than $2500.

You Need to state Model as in engine size, age and stuff, As there are just so many Engines been put in an Escort over the years, I did a water pump on a 1995 M reg 1.8 Zetec a few months ago, took me in total 5 hours as some bolts would not come out,was a pain in the @ss but they did in the end with time to think about it, please update your details....Edit...For the Benefit of those not all in the No!!...All Escort Engines After about 1986 were fitted with 1.3,1.4 ,1.6. CVH Engines, and All had a Water pump driven by the Cam Belt...All others were 1.1,1.3,1.6 litre OHV Engines that were driven by the Fan Belt, then you go on to the 2.0 Pinto in the Mk2 Mexico and RS2000....
well simply if there quite a bit of room infront of the water pump so u can take the belt, pulley, and nuts, then probably and hour or two. but if it looks very tight by it then about 3-4 maybe even 5 if it requires u to lift out the engine. but then also give some time about 20 min to properly fill and remove any bubbles in the cooling system.
if you have a mk1 2 or 3 the simplicity of the cars design means if you know what your doing it should only take an hour or 2 newer models take longer but it shouldn't be to hard good luck
    Depending on the year/engine

usually takes 2 to 4 hrs.
    1 hour
it will be about 1 hour, unless the bolts snap! Then give it 4 hours!

    is it hard?

ThanksHow long does it take to change a water pump on a 1989 Honda Accord Hatch?
A good mechanic in a well equipped shop should be able to change a water pump in about two hours. If you're trying to do it yourself, in the back of an unheated garage in the middle of winter, it may take a bit longer. How long does it take to change a water pump on a 1989 Honda Accord Hatch?
bout 2 minutes if you are good!
At least a couple hours, it's not that hard if you know what you are doing, I don't recommend you doing it on your own if you don't have the skills or the tools
it takes about 2 hours if you know what you are going. the water pump runs off of your timeing belt. so you have to be careful not to get it out of timeing.
my 1988 Accord I change timing belt and water pump at same time. Might as well do them both as long as you're in there

    Actually my mechanic does it

How difficult is it to change the water pump in a 2001 chrysler town and country?

when the body style changed for 01, the water pump moved to the backside of the engine. you have to remove the pulley with the pump now, and you have to remove the motor mount or use a 4 ft prybar to move the engine to the left for clearance. you have to use a 10mm gearwrench for the top 2 bolts. it would be a horrible job to do without a hoist. you're probably better off to let them do it if you don't have the tools. if you have the equipment its not that bad. it takes 1.5 hours per the labor time guide. How difficult is it to change the water pump in a 2001 chrysler town and country?
its a pretty hard job on that one to do,if you was given the price of 300 ,id take it,because by the time you get it done you will have wished you had paid to have it done, there hard to get too,and very little room to work in also,id think about it before i started on it,because once you start it ,you just about have to finish it,take a look at it in the day time, there's not much room in there too work on this one with, good luck on it.
3.0 is under the timing cover, may as well do the timing belt at the same time. on a 3.3 all you need to do is remove the rf wheel and splash pan, remove the serpentine belt and its visible towards the front. 1.5-2 hrs. not sure on the 3,8. hope this helps
If you T%26amp;C has the 3.8.its about an hour's job, with the proper tools.I just had mine done-2000 T%26amp;C. I had a friend do it because I didnt have the tools. He said the biggest deal was the serpintine belt. Also, change the thermostat.
sounds like the bearing went in the water pump huh? they arent too bad....depending on the size...most of them are an ';insert'; about 8 8mm bolts and its out. (of course you have to remove the pulley and belt though';. Not bad though....

Timing belt and water pump change?

I must change the timing belt of my car. I have been told that the water pump must be done too since it is right there. Due to the high price I want to postpone/skip the water pump until the next tune up. What happens if the water pump fails down the road? How long does a water pump last? 120K? My car has 60,000 miles on it. Thank you.Timing belt and water pump change?
I always suggest at same time. Most timing belt jobs are 4-5 hour jobs and all of that has to be removed to replace the water pumpp, which could be in a week a month or a year (roll the dice) it doesn't usually take much if any additional labor to replace the pump when everything else is out of the way usually just the cost of the pump itself. if you wait and say a month later the water pump goes out you would have the expense of the pump AND ALL THE LABOR AGAIN.Timing belt and water pump change?
The reason you are being told to change both at the same time is because the tear down is almost exactly the same to do both of those actions. It's highly recommended that you change both because you are probably gonna pay for 5 hours labour to change the timing belt then you are gonna pay for another 5 hours of labour when you take you car back to change the water pump, whereas had you simply changed the water pump at the same time it would have only added about 45 minutes of labour to the total labour...

Do both at the same time or don't bother doing any till you can afford both!
You don't have to renew the water pump. They mention it because it becomes easily accessible during the timing belt replacement. The extra cost should only be the cost of the water pump. So it's often sensible to include the water pump at the same time. If you do it at the next service it will cost you at least the same as you are paying now for the belt job.
There is no guarantee on how long the water pump will last, but normally 100,000 miles plus. But that is true of a timing belt too. The water pump has a weep hole at the bottom, visually check for corrosion or rust in that area. If you see some, could be a sign that it is ready to go soon. If not, then do the repairs that you can afford. But why the heck are you changing a timing belt at 60,000 miles.
    not a good idea

Yes you need to pull off the timing cover because the water pump is driven by the timing belt, or at least in the way of it . No you dont have to drop the motor. How to change a water pump in 89 Honda Prelude SI?
CAREFULLY!!!! Thats all the knowledge I have for Non American cars. Yes, I do a Hyundai, but I don't dare mess with that stuff on it, just oil, brakes, and intake and exhaust.
It is essentially the same as a timing belt change to get to it, plus the simple pump change itself. The pump is driven by the timing belt (see first source) so this is the time to replace the belt, too. I'm not familiar with the Prelude, but in most Accords and Civics of that era the driver's side motor mount is removed to make room. The engine is supported by a floor jack under the oil pan, which also allows the end of the engine to be dropped a bit for better access.
I did a head-gasket job on my car, but before I did my head-gasket job, I replaced the water pump with a life-time warranty.

Really the only thing I had to do was make enough room to get my socket/ratchet by the water pump bolts. I only had to remove the radiator, and then the fan. I had plenty of room to replace my water pump. Not sure on your car, but it pretty much the same for any situation. If you have the room to get your tools in there.

The only reason you would take the timing cover off was to inspect or remove your old timing belt and or timing chain depending on what one you have.

I don't have the book in front of me, but be prepared to remove one of your front wheels for access, likely the passenger side. Hike it up good and high and secure it on jack-stands. You'll find some removable access panels or large rubber plugs so you can get at things. With GM you'll likely need Torx sets, male and female (the ';special tool'; Mr Shop Class warned of). Also antifreeze loves to mess up your garage floor so get a large catch pan, lid off a storage bin works well, and get ready to catch two gallons of brown aqueous crap, .... oh and grab a new belt while you're in buying the fresh antifreeze, ....good luck ... ;-%26gt; ... First thing's first drain the coolant, then remove the fan shroud- and remember to disconnect the connector for the fan clutch, remove the fan- be very careful not to hit the radiator with the clutch because it will put a hole in it very quickly! you need a holding tool to hold the water pump pulley still while you remove the nuts from the water pump pulley- then take the pulley off, then the water pump, i think there are 5 bolts holding it in, then reverse the procedure to reinstall it all! good luck! How do you change the water pump in a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer?

you have to remove the whole front of the engine to get to it,if your not real familiar with doing this though it can be more than you want to take on to do,and you,ll need a good selection of tools to work with, they offer everything in a kit to do this with and that's the best way to buy the parts,if your going to attempt this at least buy a repair manual for it you,ll need it that i can guarantee you,the timing has to be right on this one or it will mess it up,good luck.I need to know how to change the water pump on a 2000 dodge intriped 2.7 liter thanks?
Dodge offers a complete kit new timing chain, guides, water pump, and tensioner. this is not an easy job. i would not recommend doing it if you don't fix cars all the time. but if your gonna do it this is the way to go. good luck.
you have to remove the timing chain to get to water pump. if you don't have some experence i wouldn't try.
need to remove upper intake valve covers, cover that goes on top radiator, remove fans, remove belts, crank balancer, a/c tensioner, alt tensioner, front timing cover, line up timing marks, remove timing chain primary tensioner, remove guides and chain sprockets. then you can remove water pump and intall in reverse sequence. dont forget to bleed cooling system or your vehicle will over heat within 10 miles of driving.

How do I change the water pump in a over 20 yr old Cadillac?

The vehicle information would be helpful. There are at least 8 different models of Cadillac's that were available 20 years ago, all of which had different engines and options. I could tell you how to replace the water pump on a 1988 DeVille but if you happen to have a Fleetwood or Eldorado, my directions won't do you any good. How do I change the water pump in a over 20 yr old Cadillac?
Taking it to a licensed Cadillac repair shop.
There is no easy way, you still have to remove the fan (if it still has a clutch fan and not an electric one) and release tension on the serpentine belt. You'll also have to remove any brackets in the way.
There isn't an easy way for you to do it. The easy way is to pay someone else to do it. The way to change the Cadillac water pump is to do a lot of work getting all that stuff out of the way- I hope to God you don't have to disconect the airconditioner since you can't get freon anymore to refill it. One of the luxuries about owning a luxury car is paying a barrel of money for simple repairs.

How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?

I need step by step instructions, as this is a 75,000 dollar car, and I dont want to break it. I also cant afford to take it in to a mechanic. How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?
It's pretty easy, I'll walk you through it. Start by draining the cooling system. If your radiator has a petcock, open it and drain the coolant into a bucket or some other container. If your radiator does not have a petcock, loosen the lower radiator hose clamp and let the fluid drain out. If it's draining really slowly, take the radiator cap off to release the vacuum pressure.

While the old pump is still mounted, remove all of it's plugs and fittings. Next, loosen and remove the fan, belts, brackets and hoses.

Now you can unbolt the old water pump. Be sure to use a scraper to clean all of the old gasket material off of the engine block (this is important).

You will have to remove the fan mounting studs from the fan hub on the old water pump. This can be done by using a pair of vise grips, stud puller socket or double nuts. To use double nuts, put two nuts onto the stud, tighten one against the other, then using a wrench on the nut closest to the hub, twist the stud out. One nut will lock against the other and you will twist the stud right out.

Put some teflon tape onto the threads of any plug or fitting that has been removed from the water pump and screw them into the new one. Carefully place the new gasket onto the pump.

Install the new pump. Work slowly and make sure the gaskets stay in place. Before you screw the bolts all the way down, apply some thread sealer on the threads to prevent water from seeping past and causing a drip at the bolt head.

Once the new pump is in, re-install the hoses and hose clamps. Now install the belts, pulleys, brackets and fan. Snug the fan into place. It's a lot easier to tighten the bolts down after the belts have been adjusted to the proper tension.

Once everything's back where it should be, fill the radiator with new engine coolant and start it up. Run it for 10-15 min or until it reaches operating temperature then shut it off. Go back under the hood and check for leaks. If everything looks good, you're done! How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?

Thank you!How do you change the water pump in a 1996 Isuzu Oasis/Honda Odyssey?
The Isuzu has a timing pump driven water pump, so if the timing belt is due to be replaced, both jobs are normally done at the same time along with replacing the timing belt tensioner pulley. It'a an ';interference'; type engine that bends the valves if the belt breaks and ruins the engine. The reason the shops want $700 is because they're doing a complete timing belt replacement to get to the water pump.

Based on your questions I would say take it to a mechanic. Have the hoses replaced while you're at it. It's up to you about the flush but the coolant will get replaced in the process anyway. About $100. for quality parts add for labor. How do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?
I would say take it to a shop to have it done. This way everything can be done right. And as with the coolant it needs to be flushed every two years but use prestone anti freeze after the flush.if you go to a parts store and get the parts and anti freeze this way you'll have the parts that is needed for replacement at the shop you take it to.And while your there at the parts store pick up 2 gallons of anti freeze you'll need at least 1 and 1/2 or so gallons of it to refill the system and blend it with water as a top off.But make sure you don't get the 50/50 mix it is half water and half anti freeze.Anti freeze has a higher boiling point to help keep the engine from over heating. You also might want to replace the thremostat also with the same degree of one.Ask the parts store for one and your hoses top and bottom.hgm20002000@yahoo.com
If you have a decent tool box you can do it your self . step 1 remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Step 2 Get under the truck and find the drain cock to the radiator. Remove the radiator cap, then put a large pan under the drain cock and open it. Have some floor dry on hand if any spills on the drive way or in the garage floor. You don't want the family pet to even taste it. IT WILL KILL THEM!!! I need to get info on how to change thw water pump and timming belt on a 88 prelude si 2.0 engine?

what do i need to remove in order to replace the water pump on a 1988 honda prelude?I need to get info on how to change thw water pump and timming belt on a 88 prelude si 2.0 engine?
FIRST find the timing mark on the balancer pulley and set it to top dead center, usually on a honda its the red mark or center mark on the pulley. The mark is on the very outer edge of the belt groove and there are usually 3 together on a honda. Carefully remove the balancer pulley, you will need a 17 mm socket and a 12 mm socket to remove the pulley. After you remove the pulley and belt you may find that the power steering pump needs to be removed from the bracket to give you room to work. You dont need to disconnect the hoses from it usually. then take the timing cover bolts off and remove the plastic timing cover. Best thing to do now is to have a Haynes manual to follow to continue because it will describe step by step how to properly time the motor and reset the belt tension. Those are VERY important so follow the instructions PRECISELY!I need to get info on how to change thw water pump and timming belt on a 88 prelude si 2.0 engine?
the timing belt and timing cover, try alldatadiy dot com, it will give you step by step instructions for shade trees.
If you buy from autozone they can print all the info out. or you could buy a repair manual for $ 20
Yeah get a Chilton's manual. They have pictures of every step. It's great.
remove the belt for the ac/alternator/power steering ( if there is power steering) the upper and lower radiator hoses, the pump has 4 bolts that hold it onto the block, it is a tight fit, so use caution and longsleeves

  • Anyone change a water pump on a 02 Rendevous?

How difficult and how much time to change the water pump on an 02 Buick Rendevous?Anyone change a water pump on a 02 Rendevous?
Talk about conflicting answers ~~ I would suggest you go to an auto supply and purchase a repair manual fot your car, about $20, but if you are going to diy you might as well invest in the needed equipment. It's not a bad job if you have the correct info.Anyone change a water pump on a 02 Rendevous?
2 to 5 hours, its a pain in the bum, especially if you dont have the right tools, big pain, probly just end up costing you the 500 bucks to get a mechanic to unscrew your car
It's easy if it's a 3.4 Liter engine , thats what should be in there.

I could probally change it in like 40 min.

If you have minimal experience with repairs like this bring it in should be like 75$, might want to get a coolant flush done also.

Can someone please give me step by step instructions on how to change the water pump in my car?

I have a 2001 Ford Focus LE I am going to try to change it myself and no absolutely nothing about doing so. I will need a thorough step by step instruction rule. Pleas do not suggest I buy a manual or take it to a garage. I am a single mom, and haven't got the money to pay for any extras. Please only answer if you can sincerely help. Thank you so much. Can someone please give me step by step instructions on how to change the water pump in my car?
the tools you need may be pricey you need to chainge a timing belt ill give you the info if you want it let me know

i never herd of a check engine light on because of a water pump you may have a different problem there i would get a second opinion is it saying your temp is to cold\hot try a sending unit low colant look for a leak

before you vote whose best you can choose him the best if you want but he left out the tecnial info of why we reccomended you not do it you need to get the crank pully off this will require an impact gun or a braker bar you may or not need to remove the mount but you will need to remove the timing belt mark it well before you take it off as it needs to go back exactly as even 1 tooth off will cause a problem that can do hundreds of dollars in dammages there are tensioneers to check and possible oil seals that may need to be replaced i think thats why we recomend you take it in as it is hard to explain all the techinal stuff in a short note where you need a 20 page book you can get a chiltons manuel that will walk you through it plan on spending all day on it it takes me 5 hours to do it

just be happy you dont have a newer ford

in 2002 or 2004 they made things worse they have specila tools required to keep it in time before you can even loosen the crank bolt

the at home do it yourselfere will be doing $1500 in damage the second they loosen that bolt i wont be working on that engine and ive been working on cars as a shop owner 21 yearsCan someone please give me step by step instructions on how to change the water pump in my car?
have a friend do it. Too complicated to explain over the comp. If not done right...it can ruin the engine.
Sincerely help? You bet. DON'T try this on your own. Ask friends/family/co-workers for the name of a good honest mechanic.
I agree with Gimpy. If you don't know how to do it then you need to find someone who does and can either (a) walk you through it, or (b) do it for you. Changing a water pump is complicated, and if you do it wrong it'll cost you a heck of a lot more money in the long run. If you don't know anyone who can help then you need to spend the $25.00 or so on a Haynes Manual for your Focus. You DO NOT want to screw it up, and there's no way anyone here could give you written instructions on how to do it.
    1. Raise the vehicle %26amp; place on jack stands

    2. Drain the coolant from the radiator

    3. Remove the front engine mount

    4. Raise the engine slightly by placing a 2X6 on a floor jack, place under oil pan

    5. Remove the serpentine belt. You may need someone to help you, releasing the idler pulley is rather tough. If no routing decal, take a digital photo or draw a map.

    6. Remove the water pump

    7. Thoroughly clean any gasket material from the block.

    8. Assemble in reverse order

    9. When refilling the coolant [50/50 mix], if possible remove a heater hose to allow any trapped air to escape.

I agree with all the others before me. It's not an easy task to try to explain, especially if you don't know the engine parts etc. that have to be removed before you can even get to your water pump. Ask friends and/ or family to help you out. If you're anywhere in east Tennessee, I'll help you myself.
i could show how to do it but it would require me the time to copy the instructions and it could be complicated job for a beginer because it requires the removal of the timing belt

i dont know where to send the info eather

i didnt understand it was u trying to contact me email is same as name @ yahoo

i anm an experianced mechanic for over 25 years

I dont know about the specific car but normally water pumps are a royal pain in the *** to change thats why they are expensive it the labor not the actual part, but if you have mechanical experience and the tools you need go for it because it will save you a ton of cashHow tuff is it to change water pump on 92 ford escort i think its 1.9 litter .?
Good luck on that one.Because of it being a transverse motor it aint gonna be easy.(belt being on the pass side of the car)I did it on a pontiac grand am and it took me about four hours. That was after i took off the motor mounts and had to jack up the motor to get the thing out.Make sure there is no little ears around when you tackle this one.How tuff is it to change water pump on 92 ford escort i think its 1.9 litter .?

    2. Remove accessory drive belt and tensioner.

    3. Remove timing belt.

    5. Remove lower radiator hose.

    6. Disconnect heater hose from water pump.

    7. Lower vehicle.

    8. Support engine with a suitable floor jack.

    9. Remove right engine mount bolts and pivot mount aside.

    10. Remove water pump bolts, raise engine and remove water pump.

For pictures check your local library for a Chilton or Haynes repair manual, they'll probably even let you make photocopies!
yeraluzer is right on the money, just wanted to add one major item. get a new timing belt (and maybe also the tensioner pulley???) Too long ago to remember exactly, but the water pump runs off the timing belt, and replacing only partial of the pump/belt/tensioner results in the premature failure (read less than 2 weeks for me!) of the other parts.
